For children, chatting has now become one of the most used means of communication. To express their feelings, they often use emoticons. However, the existing icons fall short when it comes to expressing tragic events as bullying, neglect and maltreatment.

The Swedish children's charity BRIS has been created based on the current emoticons with new ones which children may indicate mistreatment or abuse. Examples include children with a black eye or bruised their face, which is a child screaming and parents with a glass of wine or beer.

The organization hopes to help children with problems of abused emoticons rather dare to make clear what is going on. They help to talk more freely about their situation.

The Abused Emojis app is free to download from the App Store. An Android version is in the works.
